A syndicate has been established in the Kingdom called the General Syndicate for Owners of Trading Shops and Gold and Jewelry Goldsmiths, with legal personality. Its headquarters are located in the Um Uthaina area of Amman. The syndicate represents the goldsmiths sector, which is one of the most important economic sectors in the Kingdom. The gold and diamond contents of the sector are pillars of the Jordanian economy and its security, serving as both adornment and savings for citizens.
The sector's formation dates back to the establishment of the Kingdom when the shops selling ornaments and jewelry were few, mostly coming from Jaffa, Lydda, and Jerusalem after the Nakba, along with some Armenians. Many individuals apprenticed under their hands, leading to the sector's expansion and the spread of knowledge. Initially, manufacturing was done using simple manual methods, and most products were imported from neighboring countries, particularly Syria and Italy.
With the increase in the number of workers in the sector, growing demand for jewelry, and advancements in industrial and knowledge-based machinery technology, modern machines were imported, and skilled hands were trained to propel the sector forward. Recognizing the sector's importance, a group of shop owners agreed to establish a syndicate to organize and preserve its interests. In 1972, the first syndicate was established - the General Syndicate for Owners of Trade Shops and Jewelry Makers. This syndicate deals with the affairs of selling shops and manufacturing workshops, operating as a labor union affiliated with the Ministry of Labor.
According to its bylaws, the syndicate has a board of directors consisting of thirteen members elected by the members of the general assembly who have paid their annual subscriptions. It also has a branch in the city of Irbid. The syndicate maintains working relations with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Institution for Standards and Metrology, overseeing the control of the quality of locally manufactured and imported gold jewelry. Additionally, it collaborates closely with the Ministry of Labor, with which it is originally affiliated, and has connections with the Ministry of Interior and the Public Security Directorate concerning security for jewelry stores and combating money laundering, financing of terrorism, as well as relevant government agencies such as the Customs and Anti-Smuggling Department.
